Your goals in this part of the project are:

  1. To understand the state of the art of today’s geodetic reference networks
  2. To create a study guide / study notes that will help your peers understand the same

Guidance questions

I provide the following guidance questions:

1. How can we think about / classify positioning networks?

2. How can we think about / classify gravity networks?

3. What is the difference between a geodetic reference frame, a geodetic reference system, and a datum?

4. Tell me about the hierarchy of the NAD83 reference frame provided here and, generally, explain the difference between active networks and passive networks.

5. What are the differences between NAD83 and WGS84, conceptually and in practice?

6. What is the Canadian Spatial Reference System (CSRS)? Where can one learn more about it? And how is it different from the Canadian Active Control System (CASC)?

7. What is the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), how was/is it established, and why is it important? Also, what is the current solution and where can its defining parameters be found?

8. What is the North American Datum (NAD), how was/is it established, and why is it important? Also, what is the current solution and where can its defining parameters be found?

9. What is the North American Vertical Datum (NAVD), how was/is it established, and why is it important? Also, what is the current solution and where can its defining parameters be found?

10. What is the Canadian Gravity Standardization Network (CGSN), how was/is it established, and why is it important? Also, what is the current solution and where can its defining parameters be found?

11. What is the Canadian Gravimetric Geoid (CGG), how was/is it established, and why is it important? Also, what is the current solution and where can its defining parameters be found?

12. For each of the above, roughly how much do they change, e.g. on an annual basis?
